Ancona School Announces New Head of School

By | August 15th, 2014|Public News|0 Comments

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE ANCONA SCHOOL NAMES ARI FREDE AS NEW HEAD OF SCHOOL

CHICAGO, August 14, 2014 – Ari Frede has been appointed as the next Head of School at the Ancona School. Ari is a former teacher, school and arts administrator and education consultant. IMG_0583_webHe has served as Assistant Principal and Principal Intern in CPS and is well known for his commitment to arts-based education and his decade-long tenure as the Education Program Manager for Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music. In multiple schools, he has worked with teachers to lead projects instead of lessons, to heighten the level of questioning in the classroom, broaden student choice and teacher creativity, and to use the arts as a lever for raising student achievement.

A native of rural New Hampshire, Ari received his BA from Hampshire College and a Masters of Arts from the University of Mississippi. He is a current doctoral candidate in Urban Education Leadership at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

In accepting the Head of School role at Ancona, Ari states “I am terrifically happy that Ancona and I found each other. It was immediately evident that Ancona is doing what had first attracted me to education. Students make authentic choices about their learning, analyze real-world problems and develop sophisticated answers. Now that’s a school – a place where learning experiences are constructed with the student as activator, not a place where schools deposit information and then make a withdrawal at test time.”

The Board of Trustees, Head of School-Elect, Ari Frede and current Head of School, Bonnie L. Wishne are excited that Ari can begin transitioning into this role in September. Bonnie states “I’m thrilled that we have a dynamic and visionary progressive educator to build upon Ancona’s strengths and lead the school to greater achievements in the future, and I’m excited to share with Ari all that Ancona means to me. This year will give Ari the opportunity to learn how to swim in Ancona waters without being thrown into the deep end as is the case for most new school heads.”

Ari is thrilled to be a part of Ancona’s rich learning community and looks forward to this next chapter of our school’s legacy. He joins the Ancona community with his wife of ten years, Dr. Gail Stern, and their daughter Noa.

New Head of School Announced

By | August 14th, 2014|Parent News|0 Comments

Dear Ancona Community,

On behalf of the Ancona School Board of Trustees and the Search Committee, we are thrilled to announce the appointment of Ari Frede as Ancona’s next Head of School.Ari

Ari is a former teacher, school and arts administrator and education consultant. Ari is well known for his commitment to arts based education and his decade long tenure as the Education Program Manager for Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music. He was an integral part of the team responsible for the school’s educational program expansion and record increase in enrollment. He has also served as Assistant Principal and Principal Intern in CPS. In multiple schools, he has worked with teachers to lead projects instead of lessons, to heighten the level of questioning in the classroom, broaden student choice and teacher creativity, and to use the arts as a lever for raising student achievement. He is passionate about interdisciplinary and project-based learning and of course, arts education. Ari comes armed with a plethora of experience serving ethnically, culturally and economically diverse communities spanning from the Delta region to Winnetka to Chicago. A native of rural New Hampshire, Ari received his BA from Hampshire College and a Masters of Arts from the University of Mississippi. He is a current doctoral candidate in Urban Education Leadership at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Guided by the Ancona School Search Committee, this search for our next Head of School was extensive and national in scope. The Search Committee was comprised of parents, trustees, teachers, administrators, alumni and honorary trustees.  We welcomed several high caliber candidates who were all capable of serving as Ancona’s new Head of School. Ultimately, the Search Committee reached a clear and unanimous decision that the diverse breadth of Ari’s experience, especially as a successful arts and education programs administrator, was a perfect fit for our diverse community.

We are fortunate that so many members of our community were involved in the selection process. That process included several interviews with the senior leadership team, meetings with teachers, staff, students and parents, and extensive reference checks. All of these constituents were valuable in assisting with this decision.

Ari is thrilled to be a part of Ancona’s rich learning community and looks forward to this next chapter of our school’s legacy. Ari’s leadership style is collaborative. In his past work, teachers shared in decision-making, and parents shared in mapping school needs and resources. Students were crucial as change agents themselves, and also as knowledgeable reviewers of the school’s work. He joins the Ancona community with his wife of ten years, Dr. Gail Stern and their daughter Noa. Your positive support, ongoing partnership and enthusiasm of the Board’s final decision are welcomed at this time of transition.

We have the deepest gratitude and admiration for Bonnie L. Wishne’s more than three decades of work, first as a teacher and then for the past 28 years, as Head of School. She has grown Ancona from what started as a small parent cooperative to a thriving presence on Chicago’s education community.  She will be introducing you to Ari throughout this exciting school year. We are also planning various events so that our entire community has an opportunity to meet Ari.

I am personally thrilled to begin working with both Ari and Bonnie to ensure a successful school year, transition, and future. Thank you again for your support and please contact me through Ancona’s main office with any questions or feedback. We are grateful for the hard work of the Search Committee and fortunate that Ari has chosen to join us as we move Ancona forward.

Kind regards,

Keith Bevans
President, Board of Trustees
