The goal of our art program is to engender visual literacy in our students and empower them to be both creators and appreciators of visual art in all of its fluid and ever-changing manifestations. We accomplish this in a balanced and sequential program that is pedagogically consistent throughout all eight grades. Self-assessment and critical thinking skills are emphasized, and our instruction proceeds in an interrogative format with the active participation of students in discussion. Students are encouraged to bring their own objects, ideas, experiences and inspirations to share in class with teachers and students alike and to recognize that everyone brings expertise and knowledge to the table.

Through Ancona’s art curriculum, students master basic art skills, think critically, reflect on their work and learn to express thoughts and ideas creatively. Equal weight is given to developing studio skills, aesthetics, context and interpretation during the eight years of elementary art. We take an integrated approach to curriculum in every area of learning at Ancona School, and the art program is ordered to coincide and interweave with major areas of study at all levels. Throughout their years at Ancona, students learn traditional drawing, drafting, painting and sculpting skills as well as sewing, weaving, assemblage and italic calligraphy.

The importance of the teacher/student relationship is emphasized through the inclusion of the thoughts, interests and voices of the students. Both assessment and critique are accomplished through an interrogative format, and students are encouraged to express their own thoughts and ideas in class discussion as well. Students come to the Art Room with a variety of learning styles and interests, and our goal is to make sure that they all leave with equitable studio skill sets, critical thinking skills and a sense of the long trajectory of the visual expression of human thought and meaning. This means really knowing and taking into account the great variety of learning styles and types of intelligence present in every group of students.
