The multi-age classroom is designed to allow teachers and students the opportunity to develop stronger, more meaningful relationships than can be achieved in one year with one grade level of students. Teachers get to know their students better, and students of different ages can learn from and help guide each other in their learning.

The multi-age classrooms work best when there is a high level of positive interaction between students, teachers and the environment. Our multi-age classrooms provide an opportunity for children to be supported by older peers, engage in more advanced work and practice skills by teaching younger peers.

While Ancona students engage in much of their learning in the context of interdisciplinary units of study, they also attend classes in distinct disciplines. Students study Science and Social Studies, and attend Art, PE, and Library classes in multi-age groups, but some subjects, such as math, music, and Spanish, in which new learning is built on prior knowledge in a more sequential way, are taught by grade level.
