In Ancona’s science program, students do the work of scientists: learning about the world around them through systematic exploration and discovery. Our classrooms are rich with materials to spark student interest and support research and inquiry. Following the interests of the children, the science program allows the questions of our students to shape our studies. Observation naturally results in questioning how and why things happen as they do. In response to their own questions, students devise possible explanations and predictions, design and conduct research, investigate their ideas and interpret the results of their work.

We also educate children to use science concepts, skills, and values in making responsible everyday decisions and have an understanding of how science and society influence one another. Students at Ancona also develop an understanding and mastery of the design process by actively participating in project-based learning. They come to see designing as a purposeful endeavor similar to scientific inquiry, a process specifically meant to solve problems by applying or expanding scientific knowledge and methods in real-world settings. Through these projects, students become knowledgeable about how the application of science and engineering affect their everyday lives and come to understand how our society uses natural resources, energy and technology to fashion the built environment.
In the Ancona science program, students learn both about the world around them and about the scientific enterprise itself, developing critically important attitudes and behaviors about science as well as gaining relevant skills and knowledge.

Students at Ancona also develop an understanding and mastery of the engineering design process by actively participating in project-based learning.
