Formal teaching of Spanish begins in the Kindergarten with songs, games, rhymes and physical movements that introduce children to the sounds and rhythms of the Spanish language. Within a focus on the cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking communities, basic vocabulary and pronunciation are introduced through everyday conversation, read-aloud books, art and cooking activities. The hands-on, activity-centered curriculum is developmentally appropriate for our younger students, most of whom easily learn many words and phrase. The children develop a positive attitude toward learning other languages and an appreciation of cultures that may differ from our own.

Ancona's dual language program in the All-Year Montessori preprimary classroom is an enriched experience aimed at facilitating learning in both Spanish and English. The goal of this program is to spark in children the curiosity for other cultures and their languages as well as to strengthen their self esteem by realizing their ability to learn a language other than their native language. The Spanish teacher is proficient in that language and communicates to the children in Spanish all the time. Young learners in this program develop an intuitive way to interpret what the teacher says. Soon, the students start producing words and expressions to express their own thoughts much like the natural language progression of infants and toddlers. Thematic group lessons are presented in Spanish as well as individual instruction in all areas of the Montessori curriculum. In addition, the children delight in being read in Spanish as well as singing and dancing Spanish rhymes and songs. Our dual language program is a fun way to learn, in Spanish, the necessary skills for further learning.
