JOB TITLE: Building Engineer

Job Summary:

Responsible for ensuring the efficient operation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment and systems for The Ancona School properties. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) maintenance of heating, cooling, plumbing, and electrical systems of the building, performance of day-to-day preventive and corrective maintenance, conducting routine assessments, maintaining a clean and safe working environment, maintaining fire safety systems, etc. General maintenance of the building. Assists in the development of standard operating procedures. Assists in the development and implementation of energy efficiency plans. Provides input to a long-term capital budget improvement plan. Some carpentry, painting, etc. responsibilities.

Some custodial, traffic, snow removal, and lawn care responsibilities. Reports to the Director of Facilities.


  • Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs the heating and cooling systems of the buildings including the electrical and mechanical aspects of these systems (boiler, heaters, pumps, air conditioning units, ventilation systems, etc.).
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs plumbing and electrical systems of the building.
  • Inspects and tests building systems and equipment.
  • Troubleshoots equipment and identifies and solves problems.
  • Dismantles defective equipment and installs new or repaired parts.
  • Interprets building and equipment documentation to troubleshoot and make repairs.
  • Installs, repairs, and verifies proper operation of building systems and equipment.
  • Performs general repairs of floors, ceilings, roofs, doors, railings, windows, etc.
  • Maintains and repairs plumbing fixtures (toilets, urinals, water fountains, faucets, sump pumps, etc.).
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns (fire, evacuation, equipment failure, etc.).Monthly fire safety inspections and repairs (fire alarm, exit signage, emergency lights, fire extinguishers, egress clearance, etc.).
  • Uses appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Identifies specific parts, materials, and supplies for purchase.
  • Maintains proper inventory of materials essential to the maintenance of the building systems.
  • Utilizes basic computer skills to enter and access job-related information.
  • Maintains appropriate service tracking and documentation.
  • Keeps working areas clean, organized, and safe.
  • Wears and/or uses appropriate safety equipment.
  • Works with other Facilities employees to teach them building system protocols, procedures, and equipment.
  • Assists others with some custodial, traffic, snow removal, and lawn care responsibilities.
  • Assists others Facilities employees in the completion of their maintenance work.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Completion of annual safety training.
  • Undertakes training related to job duties as deemed necessary.
  • Complies with all applicable codes, regulations, governmental agency, and company directives as relates to building operations and practice safe work habits.
  • Works with Supervisor to develop and implement standard operating procedures.
  • Works with Supervisor to develop and implement energy efficiency plans.
  • Provides input to a long-term capital budget improvement plan.


  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Completion of job-related apprenticeship programs preferred.
  • HVAC certifications preferred.
  • Advanced job-related training programs preferred.
  • Completion of job-related associate’s degree (AA) preferred.
  • Coursework completion or certification in one or more of the following core competencies – HVAC, basic electrical, plumbing, piping, and fluid-handling systems, refrigeration, or an encompassing certification such as in physical plant maintenance preferred.


  • Five years related work experience required in operating mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in a similar setting required.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Working knowledge of building systems operation, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing skills required.
  • Aptitude for the work to be performed.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing maintenance activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize computer programs and learn basic computer operations related to position requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical functions relevant to the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret relevant documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to read printed materials, drawings, schematics, instructions, and specifications.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to respond to emergency calls during non-work hours.
  • Must demonstrate manual dexterity.
  • Must be physically capable of strenuous activity over extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs. and move loads appropriate to job requirements and be able to bend, stoop, crouch, and work in a kneeling position for periods of time.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, be capable of working at heights as required, be able to enter and work within tight spaces, stand for long periods of time, and be able to withstand hot and cold temperatures.
  • Must be able to multitask, rearrange priorities as necessary, maintain focus in a fast-paced environment.

Pay Range:

  • $27 – 32 hourly
