Janet Gray-McKennis was raised on the east coast and in England. She studied Greek and Latin at St. Louis University, anticipating a career in paleography. A member of the St. Louis Catholic Worker community, Janet helped to run a house of hospitality for 50 and a soup kitchen that served up to 200 people a night. She also worked as an organizer for peace and racial and economic justice. Janet began working at Ancona in 1985, and was moved to change her career path and begin Montessori training almost immediately. After teaching in the preprimary and first and second grades, Janet left Ancona for two years. Returning from England to teach Ancona third and fourth graders, Janet settled in to collaborate with her amazing colleagues. All three of her children attended Ancona. Janet finds joy in the quotidian; she loves live music, the lake, and learning.
