Auxiliary Program Staff & Summer Counselor

Position Summary
Auxiliary Program Staff are responsible for supervising groups of children ages 3-14 and planning non-facilitator-led programs during Aftercare, Ancona Extra (school days off), and select evening events. Auxiliary Program Staff work closely with the Director of Auxiliary Programs, as well as other educators, administrators, and program facilitators.

During the summer months, the Summer Counselor will take on additional responsibilities to ensure a safe, engaging, and enriching camp experience for students enrolled in Ancona Summer.
Essential Duties of the Job

  • Supervise children ages 3-14 on the playground and in school classrooms, ensuring student safety and adhering to established zones of supervision.
  • Maintain accurate daily attendance records and navigate attendance documents using Google Apps.
  • Distribute daily snacks to children after school and on school days off.
  • Develop and lead engaging outdoor and indoor games and activities each day.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of school policies and guidelines, consistently upholding the norms of a peaceful learning community.
  • Set up and take down tables and benches in the auxiliary program room daily.
  • Clean up after snacks, ensuring a hygienic and organized space each day.
  • Stay informed of individual student schedules by reading daily emails from the Director of Auxiliary Programs regarding changes in pick-up times.
  • Foster relationships with students' families and caregivers, ensuring familiarity with authorized adult guardians for student pick-up.
  • Lead groups of children on local field trips during school days off under the guidance of the Director of Auxiliary Programs, including travel to and from destinations.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Auxiliary Programs, Educators, Administrators, and Program Facilitators.
Summer Counselor Responsibilities
During Ancona Summer, the Summer Counselor will assume additional responsibilities to create a structured and enjoyable camp environment.
  • Facilitate and lead engaging summer activities, including arts, crafts, science experiments, outdoor play, and water-based activities.
  • Supervise campers on local field trips, ensuring safety and engagement throughout the trip.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to campers, fostering positive peer relationships and social-emotional growth.
  • Assist in planning and implementing daily and weekly summer camp schedules in collaboration with the Director of Auxiliary Programs.
  • Lead group activities that promote teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
  • Monitor and ensure camper safety, adhering to emergency procedures and first aid protocols when necessary.
  • Actively participate in staff training and professional development sessions before and during the summer program.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, providing updates on camper experiences as needed.
    Support the setup and cleanup of program spaces, maintaining a safe and organized environment.
Physical Demands
  1. Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or uneven surfaces.
  2. Standing: Remaining on foot for extended periods.
  3. Walking: Moving on foot over long distances or between sites.
  4. Talking: Clearly communicating instructions and information to students and staff.
  5. Hearing: Understanding spoken words and instructions at normal speaking levels, with or without assistance.
Work Environment
  1. Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
  2. Environmental exposure: Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
  1. Nonexempt
  2. Aftercare: 3 PM - 6 PM
  3. Ancona Extra: Shifts between 8 AM - 4 PM
  4. Summer Camp: Shifts between 7:30 AM - 6 PM
Programming occurs Monday-Friday from early September to mid-June. Summer camp runs from mid-June through mid-August.

School breaks and holidays will be noted on the school calendar and communicated in advance by the Director of Auxiliary Programs.

Travel
  1. 0 – 10% local travel (for field trips and off-site activities)
Required Education and Experience
  1. Bachelor's or Associate degree
  2. Minimum of three to five years of experience working with children in a school, summer camp, auxiliary program, or childcare setting
Preferred Education and Experience
  1. Experience working in an independent school or progressive education setting
